Madeleine Clamorgan, the noble great grandmother of the entrepreneur Sebastien Clamorgan

Madeleine is a leading figure within the Clamorgan family: as a teacher and intellectual, she is well known for her contribution to the foundation of Catholic schools in France between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. She dedicated herself to education and culture, and her life can be considered an example of passion for initiative. She is the great grandmother of the entrepreneur Sebastien Clamorgan.

Sebastien Clamorgan’s great grandmother Madeleine: a life dedicated to culture

Madeleine was born in Mayenne, in northwest France, in 1880. As showed by her commitment to culture throughout her life, she had a great passion for studying since she was very young. Indeed, during primary education, her teachers were astonished by her intelligence, and helped her to pursue a higher education in Paris, where she moved after 1897. In the French capital she met as well her future husband Charles Daniélou, thus becoming Mrs. Daniélou after getting married, as it was customary at the time. One of their children was Jean Daniélou, the Cardinal of Paris in the 70s of the twentieth century. Her contribution to the foundation of Catholic schools in France is one of the cultural activities for which Sebastien Clamorgan’s great grandmother is most remembered. Together with Miss Desrez, indeed, she founded the “Ecole Normale Libre Ms. Danielou” in 1907, and this was followed by the foundation of another Catholic school in 1913, the “Colleges Sainte Marie” in Neuilly sur Seine, which gave over 17,000 students the opportunity to receive education. During her experience as a teacher and literate, she personally took care of philosophy classes, as well as the organization of conferences and lectures to spread culture among her students. Her commitment led her to become famous among the intellectuals of that time: one of these was Léonce de Grandmaison, who later became her spiritual mentor. Grandmaison always stayed by her side, and never left Madeleine until her death in 1927. Because of the importance of her role, Sebastien Clamorgan is now committed to keeping alive his great grandmother’s memory, as she is an example of passion towards culture and initiative. The same ability to start things has been handed down from generation to generation, reaching up Madeleine’s great grandson.
